Michael Atkinson Resigns
Adelaidenow.com.au is reporting that controversial Attorney-General Michael Atkinson is to resign his position on the front bench following this weekend’s Adelaide elections. While he will remain in parliament until the next election in 2014, he will resign his position as Attorney-General.
As Australia’s most outspoken critic of a proposed R18+ rating for games, Michael Atkinson’s departure from the position, combined with a record 55,000 submissions to the recent discussion paper, could pave the way for this much-needed change to the ratings system to happen sooner rather than later.

I read the report, and while I think he was not up for the job as Attorney General, his speech given on the resignation has caused myself to respect him as a person. (Which beforehand I thought he wasn’t a person.)
He resigned with himself admitting fault and that he is embarrassed about the whole thing. And that is why I now respect him, it took alot of guts to say such a thing.
Best of luck, Mr Atkinson.

That’s good, but just one battle in the war. Gotta see who the replacement is, and pressure the other AGs except ACT, who has openly supported it.

i was reading this and getting happy
then i saw someone say “will it really make a difference wont someone else come in and go against it”
i do not think so
5/6 State governers were for it
if the new SA attorney general is intelligent, he will look at how hated atkinson was for stopping our freedoms
and not go against it
michael atkinson only went against it cause he was always the family first kinda guy, he didnt like a game where people were dying, he was a dinosaur, we need someone in who has at least used the internet once in their life.

@shaunoez, it’s still up in the air on two fronts: Tasmania has a new government and SA will have a new AG. No word yet if Labour (in SA) will continue with Atkinson’s line, or whether they will at least be open to discussion.

Still have to get around Media Mike. Like Atkinson he seems keen on pushing his own personal predjudices into law. It remains to be seen whether he will actually listen to the people as he claims he will do. Personally, I think he will choose a new AG who will toady up to him and won’t let the facts get in his way. I’ve been a Labor voter for 30 odd years but I didn’t vote for them in this election (didn’t vote for any high profile parties for that matter).
